Renault Kwid

Renault Kwid waiting period reduced

French auto-maker Renault's small hatchback Kwid has become an instant hit, garnering over 85,000 bookings in the country, and compelling the company to ramp up production to meet the unprecedented demand.

The staggering sales of Kwid led the waiting period of this entry level model going up to 10 months in certain cities, within few weeks of its launch. However, things seem to be getting back on track now after the increase in production from the original 5,000 units per month. Renault dealers have confirmed to IBTimes India that the waiting period of the Kwid has dropped in the country after the company increased production of the model.
Dealers of Renault in top cities informed this reporter that the waiting period of the Kwid has seen a decline to up to six months from the previous 10 months. While in city like Bengaluru the waiting period is six months, in Delhi the Kwid has a waiting period of up to four months. In Chennai, Renault Kwid enjoys a waiting period of up to five months depending on the variant. Dealers in Mumbai informed us the waiting period now stands at six months.
Offered in four variants — Standard, RxE, RxL and RxT — under the hood, Kwid gets 799cc three-cylinder petrol motor, which is tuned to churn out 53bhp and a peak torque of 72Nm with a five-speed manual gearbox. The Kwid, the first car to be built on the CMF-A platform, offers the best-in-class mileage at 25.17kmpl. The company has recently hiked the prices of the Kwid in the country by up to Rs 11,000.
Now, the top-end variant, the Kwid RXT Driver Airbag (O), has been priced at Rs 3,64,130 with the hike of Rs 10,999, while the entry-level standard model costs Rs 2,59,968, with a hike of Rs 3,000.

10 highest selling cars in December

The entry level segment has seen a new entrant shake things up in December. Renault Kwid, the hatchback with SUVish looks, has become one of the 10 best selling cars in India for the first time. According to industry sources, Kwid, which was launched on September 24, sold 6,888 units in December, earning it ninth place in the list.

The hatchback which has been priced at Rs 2.56 lakh ex-showroom Delhi, has overtaken Hyundai Eon in sales. Eon, although saw a growth of 9.4 percent by selling 6,563 units as against 5,997 units in December 2014, had to settle for the tenth position.

December has also proved to be a bit of a surprise in terms of the biggest losers among the top 10 cars in the month. The torchbearers for their respective companies not so long ago, Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Elite i20 have been the only two cars which have de-grown in December 2015 as compared to the same month last year.

Maruti Swift's sales fell by 16.4 percent in December 2015, selling just 14,548 units, far below 17,410 units sold a year ago. This has led to Swift shedding 2 spots to settle at fourth place in the list of 10 highest selling cars in December.

Maruti Swift’s sales fell by 16.4 percent in December 2015, selling just 14,548 units

While the loss in sales was not as severe for Elite i20, the loss in position is the same as Swift and is the seventh most sold car last month. Hyundai's premium hatchback sold 8,629 units in December 2015, 7.6 percent lower than 9,345 sold in December 2014.

Looking at the segment, the loss can be directly attributed to the emergence of Maruti Suzuki Baleno. In just two months since its launch on October 26, Baleno has overtaken i20 and is hot on the heels of Swift. In December, Baleno sold 10,572 units to earn sixth place in the list. After not-so-impressive show by S-Cross, Baleno had to perform to back Maruti's push into the premium segment.

The best performers in the list, both absolute sales wise and growth wise, come from the stable of Maruti Suzuki.

The first car to be introduced with automated manual transmission in India, Celerio sold 8,019 units

Maruti Suzuki Alto retains the Numero Uno position by selling 22,589 units in December. However, the growth experienced by this entry-level car has been low at just 1.3 percent. As for growth rate, Maruti Celerio leads the chart with 65.3 percent year-on-year growth. The first car to be introduced with automated manual transmission in India, Celerio sold 8,019 units last month compared to 4,851 units in December 2014. This helped Celerio jump two places to eighth in the list.

India's largest car maker by volume, Maruti, has managed to hold on to second and third position as well with its compact sedan Dzire and tall-boy Wagon-R respectively. Dzire sold 16,790 units to register a growth of 8.1 percent and Wagon-R saw a decent 18.7 percent growth by selling 14,645 units in December 2015.

Hyundai Grand i10, which was at fifth spot in December 2015, was the second best performer in terms of growth rate in the list. It sold 12,749 units last month which is 55.2 percent better than 8,210 units sold in corresponding month last year.
